How laser hair removal works on the underarms
Underarm laser hair removal switches off the hair papilla through targeted heat from a diode laser pulse. The method works best when dark hair grows on lighter skin, and that combination is exactly what defines the underarm: the hair holds a lot of pigment, while the skin underneath rarely sees sunlight. The MeDioStar Monolith runs at two wavelengths (808 nm and 940 nm), heating the pigment in the hair shaft without harming the surrounding skin. That is why underarms rank among the most effective zones for laser hair removal, and the fear that the laser “won’t take” rarely applies here.
A second effect is often underestimated: with less hair, there is less surface for the skin bacteria behind the typical underarm odour to settle on. The sweat glands themselves stay untouched, so the amount of sweat does not change. Even so, many clients report a noticeably more pleasant smell after several sessions, because the odour-forming process loses its base.
Which device ISBeauty uses for underarms
For underarms ISBeauty uses the MeDioStar Monolith from German manufacturer Asclepion. The diode laser runs at two wavelengths (808 nm and 940 nm) and therefore reaches the follicle more deeply than single-wavelength systems. In the underarm cavity, where hair roots sit deep in the tissue, this property is the condition for a stable result. Asclepion systems are CE certified and have been used for years in clinics and studios across the DACH region.
For laser hair removal in Berlin in a sensitive zone like the underarms, the skin cooling system matters too. The MeDioStar Monolith has integrated contact cooling: the skin surface drops to a few degrees during each pulse, and the heat sensation falls noticeably. On Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI the longer 940 nm wavelength allows treatment without overheating the pigment in the surface layer.
How many sessions are needed and how long a session lasts
A full course of underarm laser hair removal includes six to eight sessions at six-to-eight-week intervals. This is tied to the hair cycle: only hairs in the active growth phase (anagen) react to the light pulse, and just 20–30% of underarm hairs are in that phase at any given time. With each session the diode laser captures the next wave of growing hair, and the main protocol runs over six to nine months. Visibly thinner hair shows as early as the second or third session.
A single session on both underarms lasts five to ten minutes. The zone is small, easy to reach, and among the fastest laser procedures of all. You arrive after a shower, already shaved, without deodorant or creams, because ISBeauty does not shave on site and surface hair that is too long soaks up the energy before it reaches the root. The skin is cleansed, contact gel is applied, and the specialist moves the applicator in overlapping passes over the underarm cavity. If you are planning laser hair removal in Berlin during your lunch break, thirty minutes including travel is enough.
How to prepare for the session
Four weeks before the first session, stop waxing, sugaring, and plucking in the underarms. These methods pull the hair papilla out together with the hair, and that is exactly the structure the diode laser needs to target, so removing the root deprives the laser of its target. Shaving is allowed and even welcome the night before, because surface hair that is too long absorbs the energy before it reaches the root.
Two to four weeks before the session, avoid sunbathing and tanning beds. On tanned skin the pigment in the upper layer rises, the energy spreads less precisely, and the risk of pigment changes goes up. Self-tanner is paused until it has fully washed off, acid peelings and retinol products are stopped a week ahead, and perfumed deodorants and creams are washed off on the day of the procedure.

What matters after the session
In the first 24 to 48 hours after the session, avoid sport, sauna, pool, and perfumed deodorants. The skin is sensitive in this window and reacts more strongly to friction, heat, and chemical irritants than usual. Right after the procedure a little swelling may appear around each treated follicle, a normal sign that the heat reached the root, and it settles within a few hours. A soothing panthenol product is applied by the specialist directly in the studio.
Instead of a classic antiperspirant, use an alcohol-free mild deodorant or plain thermal water for the first two to three days. From the third day all usual routines are fine again. After seven to ten days the treated hairs shed from the follicle on their own, a process often mistaken for regrowth. Underarm laser hair removal in Berlin gives noticeably thinner hair already after the second or third session, the clearest sign the method is working.
When laser hair removal for underarms is not performed
Underarm laser hair removal is not performed during an active sun tan, on fresh tattoos in the area, during pregnancy, or while taking strong photosensitizing medications. These include retinoids and tetracycline-group antibiotics, which markedly raise the risk of skin reactions under light pulses. Active skin conditions such as untreated breakouts, eczema, or fungal infections in the underarms are discussed before the session. Light blond, white-grey, or red underarm hair responds weakly to the diode laser because of its low pigment content.
Before the first procedure ISBeauty runs a test pulse on a small area of the underarm cavity and determines the skin type by Fitzpatrick. This preliminary check spots possible reactions before the whole zone is treated, and clears the main safety question before the start. For unclear skin findings, a dermatologist visit beforehand is the safer route.

One session of laser hair removal for both underarms at ISBeauty costs 50 €.. FAQ
Frequently asked questions about underarm laser hair removal
Will sweating change after underarm laser hair removal?
No, you sweat the same amount. The diode laser reaches only the hair papilla in the follicle, not the sweat glands, which sit in a deeper skin layer the pulse never touches. What often shifts after several sessions is the smell, since the bacteria behind it have less hair surface to settle on.
When can I return to the gym or sauna after the procedure?
Hold off on sport, sauna, and pool for about 48 hours. Sweat and rubbing irritate the freshly treated follicles and can bring up small bumps. A walk or easy yoga on the same day is fine, while strength training and cardio are best left until the third day.
Which deodorant should I use after laser hair removal?
For the first two to three days reach for an alcohol- and fragrance-free option or a thermal water spray. Classic aluminium antiperspirants and perfumed deodorants sting on freshly treated skin. From the fourth day your usual product is fine again.
Does laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs in the underarms?
Yes, and the effect lasts. Ingrowns appear when a hair cannot break through the surface, a common result of years of shaving. The diode laser switches off the papilla, so the cause itself drops away. Most people see a clear improvement by the second or third session.
Can I get underarm laser hair removal during my period?
Yes, there is no barrier to it, though the hormonal phase can lower your pain threshold, so some clients move the visit by three to five days. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, though, the treatment is not done at all.
Does the procedure work on dark or tanned underarm skin?
Yes, the MeDioStar Monolith is cleared for Fitzpatrick types IV to VI. The longer 940 nm wavelength slips past the pigment in the upper layer and reaches the root more precisely. After sun or a tanning bed ISBeauty waits two to three weeks, and on very dark skin always starts on a reduced setting.
How painful is underarm laser hair removal compared to other zones?
Underarms sit in the medium-to-high range. The skin is thin and richly supplied with blood, the roots run deep and hold plenty of pigment, so the pulse is felt more. Most describe it as a warm prickling, and the built-in cooling takes the edge off. Very sensitive clients can apply an over-the-counter numbing cream half an hour before.
What happens to results already achieved if I interrupt the course?
Follicles the laser has already switched off stay gone, they do not grow back. Stop after three or four sessions and return months later, and the course simply picks up where it left off. Hormonal shifts in the meantime can wake a few new hairs, so ISBeauty reassesses the skin when you restart.
